Self-Identity

Identity is concerned largely with the question: “Who am I?”  Identity relates to our basic values that dictate the choices we make (e.g. relationships, career). These choices reflect who we are and what we value.  Lack of a clear sense of identity will lead to uncertainty about what we want to do in life.

It is important to realise that as we go through life that our perception of things change which can then lead us to question our existing  way of life. It is normal for teenagers especially go through a period of uncertainty and confusion while they make sense of everything around them.

We might find the urge to question for example our sexuality or faith.

Here are some points to bear in mind:

Take your time

As we go through periods of uncertainty, its important that we stay calm and take as much time as possible in order to find the answers that we’re looking. Don’t put yourself under pressure to rush to conclusions.

Do your research

Talk to as many people as  possible and be open minded. Be prepared to listen and to try and understand different viewpoints.

Question your motives

Some times difficulties faced in the past may make you rebel. In particular, the feeling of being “forced” to adopt a particular way of life may make you resent it. Ask yourself, am I right in resenting something that may actually be good for me?  Adopting a different way of life in protest may not be the best option so try and calm down, minimise the emotions and take a more objective view on issues. This is the best way to come to a more accurate judgement about your identity.
